“From 5G to 6G: White House Takes the Lead in Future Wireless Technology
“6G Development” #GlobalPalm
The White House has scheduled a meeting on Friday to convene with government officials, business leaders, and members of the academic community.
The purpose of this gathering is to discuss strategies for the development of next-generation 6G wireless technology and to draw insights from the implementation of 5G.
While the actualization of 6G technology is still years away, this initiative by the administration is likely driven by the desire to outpace China and restore the United States’ position as a leader in wireless connectivity.
Additionally, the meeting aims to meticulously plan for new technologies that are crucial to national security and the overall economy.
A security official from the Biden administration emphasized the importance of addressing these matters early on during a press call on Thursday evening.
The White House intends to leverage the lessons learned from the 5G rollout, particularly the significance of early involvement and resilience, to shape the development of a 6G network that prioritizes performance, accessibility, and security.

While 5G has already demonstrated remarkable advancements in terms of speed, reliability, and latency compared to its predecessor, 4G, the adoption of 5G by consumers in the United States still lags behind that of 4G.
However, it is worth noting that the infrastructure for 5G in the US is largely complete, with the final few carriers launching their 5G services in 2022.
In contrast, ABI Research predicts that by the end of 2023, over 270 million subscribers will utilize 4G connectivity, while just over 170 million will be subscribed to 5G.
Although certain countries, such as China, have made more significant progress in this area, it is important to consider that the conditions in China differ from those in the US, as the Chinese government wields greater influence over business decisions.
Gergs pointed out that the delayed progress in building 5G network infrastructure in the US has led to a lower rate of 5G adoption.
Consequently, the quality of 5G networks is compromised, potentially reducing the appeal for consumers to pay extra for 5G services.
According to Gergs, consumers are content with the performance of 4G connectivity, which diminishes their willingness to pay an additional fee for the faster data rates and low latencies promised by 5G.
The characteristics of 6G are still unknown.
The administration believes that by combining AI, advanced software, cloud computing, and cutting-edge semiconductor chips, they can establish faster networks to support applications in health, energy, transportation, water, and agriculture.
The government’s initial emphasis on 6G may inadvertently create excessive excitement around this forthcoming technology,
thereby posing a challenge for carriers to persuade current consumers to invest in upgrading their existing 5G subscriptions, as stated by Gergs. This situation presents a delicate predicament for the wireless industry.
